Why I Stopped Trying to Bounce Back

There was a time I thought strength meant getting back to where I was.

Back to a pre-baby body.
Back to a “normal” routine.
Back to the version of myself that didn’t second-guess, didn’t forget, didn’t cry from sheer overstimulation.

But I’ve come to see that this pressure to return: to bounce back, isn’t just about the body. It’s a mindset we’re handed in nearly every part of life:

  • In work, we’re told to prove that nothing’s changed.
  • In motherhood, to show we can “still do it all.”
  • In friendship, do not drop the ball.
  • In adventure, to keep pushing, performing, producing.
  • In grief or rupture, to move on before we’ve even made meaning of what we’ve lived through.

This bounce-back story says: You can change, but not too much.
Be resilient, but don’t let it show.
Rebuild, but be quick and quiet about it.

And when this shows up on the trail: our place of return, of movement, of deep exhalation, it can strip us of what we came for in the first place.

Adventure Isn't a Stage for Your Old Self to Prove Herself Again

We don’t need to hike the way we did five years ago.
We don’t need to run faster than we did before kids.
We don’t need to be the same woman we were before heartbreak, illness, burnout, or transition.

The trail doesn’t care about your stats.
It’s not grading your return.
It’s just there: offering you ground to move on, breath to soften into, space to begin again.

And if we let the bounce-back story follow us into adventure, we risk turning even this sacred space into one more performance. One more place to prove instead of be.

Redefining Strength

Here’s what I know now:

  • Strength isn’t about appearing unchanged. It’s about showing up changed, and moving anyway.
  • Integration matters more than speed.
  • Resilience doesn’t always roar: sometimes it whispers, “I’m here. Still here.”
  • The trail can reflect you back to yourself, if you let it, messy, real, adapting in real time.
