My Childhood Shaped by the Ocean
My love for the outdoors was cultivated from an early age. Raised by adventurous parents, I spent much of my childhood sailing the Pacific, learning life skills that extended far beyond a traditional classroom. From navigating weather patterns to spearfishing, my education was deeply experiential.
"My parents pulled us out of school for a term at a time so we could sail and explore. We learned by doing—drawing the fish we caught, understanding wind movements and engaging with local cultures."
These early experiences shaped my connection to nature and adventure, instilling in me a belief that learning and growth happen in the moments of immersion, exploration and sometimes, discomfort.
Raising Wild Children in a Modern World
Now a mother to two boys, I’m conscious of how I integrate adventure into their lives. From Melbourne’s outer suburbs to a remote off-grid island and now to the heart of New Zealand, each location has required a different approach to nurturing a connection with nature.
Parenting in today’s fast-paced world comes with its challenges. Screen time, school schedules and urban living can easily pull families away from nature. But I make adventure a priority.
Tips for Parents Looking to Incorporate More Outdoor Time:
- ✔ Start small: daily barefoot time, walks or picnics in the park.
- ✔ Say yes to spontaneous micro-adventures.
- ✔ Prioritise weekend getaways to natural spaces.
- ✔ Let kids lead: observe what excites them in nature.
- ✔ Remove the pressure: it’s about presence not perfection.
"It takes a choice. It’s easier to stay home but when we do make the effort—pack the car and head to the trails or the ocean—it’s always worth it."
Adventure Looks Different in Every Season
For me, adventure has evolved with life’s seasons. Where I once sought endurance challenges and big, bold expeditions, I now find fulfilment in smaller, more intimate adventures with my family.
"This year, my goal is an overnight hike with Jackson. A 7km bushwalk to a hut, just the two of us. It’s not a 50km ultra but it’s an adventure in its own right."
Honouring Seasons: A Tribute to Lizzy Crouch
As we reflect on the evolution of Her Trails, it’s impossible not to acknowledge the incredible contributions of Lizzy Crouch. Lizzy’s journey with us began when she completed our 21.1km programme, igniting her passion for adventure and community. Soon after, she responded to a call for support that I posted on our Facebook page and from that moment, she became an integral part of our team.
Recently, Lizzy made the decision to transition from her role and join our Legacy Members. This shift allows her to step away from remote work and deepen her roots in Cambridge, New Zealand, where her family has now settled.
And while letting go of something meaningful is never easy, there is a deep beauty in honouring the change.
"We often hold on to things—even good things—because they have shaped us. But just like in nature, seasons shift. The leaves let go in autumn, not because they aren’t beautiful, but because the tree is making space for what’s next."
